Ahoy!
I’m Rebecca Marie Noonan, but at school I am Captain Becca Noonan of the One-Eyed Platypus (my pirate/circus house here). My big brother, Alex, calls me Boo, since when I was little (*ahem* still) I would jump out from behind things smaller than me and yell “Boo!!!” a lot, and expect him to be scared.  You can call me either Becca or Boo!

This will be my first year at Camp Augusta and I’m so excited! I keep finding out new things to jump up and down for. (I do that a lot… you’ll get used to it.) I can’t wait to get out to sunny California from my school in Oberlin, Ohio.  I’m graduating about 6 days before we counselors have to be at camp, and driving west directly from school.  The gown from graduation will make an awesome wizard’s robe with a little altering!

At Oberlin, I have been studying psychology and neuroscience, focusing on adolescence and physiology.  I love our physio lab, because it looks like some cross between the 70s and Star Trek, with white squishy walls, gadgets everywhere, and Nigel, the protective lab gargoyle.  (Yes, he really is labeled…) My first step after graduation is Camp Augusta, and from there, I will be going with the wind a little bit, but I’m hoping to end up eventually in Oakland, CA working with a social circus program.  Social Circus is when circus performers and social workers come together in areas with large amounts of children and teens who would benefit from having an adult (well… circus performer) in their life who will remind them to play, be a stable role model, and teach them awesome skills in the process!

As you may have guessed by now, I am a circus performer! I am mostly a partner and group performer, and really enjoy fire and multi-prop acts, which suit me well since I spin rope dart, poi, hoop, contact juggle, contact staff, toss juggle a little, spin plates, and even play with a magic wand!  I currently perform with OCircus!, the Oberlin College community based circus group, which is 4 years old this year, and going strong! This year we have four circuses, and for the last, big circus, there will be over 100 Oberlin students participating, as well as a group of 19 children from the community, whom a few friends of mine and I are teaching.

At school this semester, I’ve been trying to learn to make everything (or almost everything) that I will need to live after I decide to settle in a place.  I’m really interested in building everything by hand and with recovered materials, because I want to do everything I can to be as sustainable as I can be. I really like joinery, and am currently working on a meditation bench and nesting shelf, made all from recovered materials and refinished/cut by hand. I also made my first tea pot from clay last week, and am waiting anxiously for it to come out of the kiln to see if the handle and spout have stayed on!

I can’t wait to get to Camp Augusta and meet all of you! I’m already excited to have an oatmeal fight, get to use my special pirate voice, sing (probably off key- but with gusto!), dance, play, and love life with all of you!

Let’s see if anyone can guess this:  What goes up a chimney down, but can’t go down a chimney up?
Until Soon,
Becca
