BETHANY VON BEZOLD H. sapiens.                                                           Counselor

Common Name: B, Beazley, B-train

Description: Stands 5’5’’ tall at 21 years of maturity. Distinctive features are green/grey eyes, blondish hair, and short, stubby toes. Though not particularly ticklish, this species of counselor can produce satisfying squeals when caught by surprise. Speaks English and some German, Spanish, French and Pig Latin.

Where found: Endemic to Southern Ontario, Canada. Currently found at Guelph University studying botany and women’s studies.

Environment and Light: transplants well to Northern California climates. Requires sunlight and regular watering as well as quantities of sleep (any time of day or night). Though this specimen is adaptable it thrives best in an outdoor environment. If you must keep it indoors, a warm sunny window is best. It grows well in student or volunteer environments in South America and South Africa. In general city environments are less than ideal.

Type of soil: A moist well-drained loam is preferable, but even the driest of dusty soils are tolerated when daily showers and lake dips are available.

Flowering time: Spring to frost. This mobile organism thrives in warm weather. In the extreme climate of her native Canada, at the first whisper of frost the winter warmies come out and flowers are put away till next summer! Can be coaxed to flower early in warm weather.

Likes: boats (all kinds); dinner for breakfast and breakfast for dinner; learning and doing new things; being silly; books by Terry Pratchett; knitting; not falling off bicycles; making sure everyone has what they need; dancing to the point of exhaustion; hanging out in the garden; hugs; playing or listening to music; making friends; tea; adventures; postcards; dressing up; themed events (because they include dressing up); other people’s family get-togethers; community living; snorkelling; being alive right now!

Dislikes: sitting in a classroom all day, cold weather, people or things; mathematics; incorrect grammatical use of “I” and “less”; throwing up; making phone calls; being under-slept; the fact that summer camp only happens in…well, the summer.

Use: Ears are good for listening. Eyes operate to keep you safe and watch you triumph. Mouth makes an excellent smile and works hard to tell good stories. Shoulders are multipurpose- good for carrying heavy loads or children as well as very absorbent when tears are shed. Legs enable frequent walking, running, hopping and dancing and make an effective lap at a moments notice. Hands can make (or help you to make) a wide range of beautiful, useful and even tasty items, from tie-dye and stained glass to blackberry smoothies and ceramics. Arms suffice to attach hands to body and skin, skin keeps me in!

Aspirations: This counselor wants to be a midwife when she grows up. I also would like to finally learn how to juggle properly, and raise one eyebrow. The objective for the summer is to work hard and play hard with the goal that every person at camp has an experience well worth their while.

Caution in regards to edibility: This camp Augusta staff member is NOT actually poisonous, but will try to get away- rather difficult to eat- not recommended!

Note: Belongs to a widespread and diverse group called ‘Waldorf school graduates’.

Challenge to you: Can you change your mind about something this summer? Can you enjoy something you thought you hated? It can be a small thing, like discovering tomatoes aren’t always yucky. It could also be a big thing, like discovering it can actually feel GREAT to be 60 feet off the ground when you thought you would always be afraid of heights!
