Good morning Augustan family and family to be! Lizy Meacham here, typing to you from my family’s humble abode in Sebastopol, California. The sun is rising, the fog is clearing and the birds are shaking themselves from slumber. I just returned home from work; baking cookies all night long is strenuous labor. ;)
It astounds me that an entire year has passed since I nervously arrived at Camp Augusta, knowing only a few souls, and anxious to see what kind of adventures lay ahead in Oak 2. Little did I know it would end up being one of the best summers of my 25 years! I think back, now, on late-night embers, secret hangout spots, decorated cabins, Yuba picnics, and all the many friendships that were formed throughout it all! So much fun we had, and now we are here, meeting the sunshine and shady trees of an entirely new summer at Camp! I cannot express through words just how ecstatic I am to visit with old friends, and discover new ones!
This year, my role at camp looks a little different: rather than spending the summer in Oak 2, I will be acting as the supporting role to the entire Oak Village! My oh my, the trouble that lays ahead;) Whatever you ladies are cooking up for me this year, don’t think for one second I don’t have some new tricks up me sleeve allow for us all to grow! I’ve collected new stories from my time in Central America, learned some new songs on the good ol’guit box, and perfected my dance moves just for you all! You have so much to look forward to!
For those of you whom I will have the pleasure of meeting for the first time this year, I will share a brief history of my life and experiences (really, quite brief): I grew up in Northern California, as the middle daughter of three girls. I frequently was found in the performing arts classes during my middle and high school careers. I later obtained my Bachelor of Arts degree from a private college in Portland, Oregon called Warner Pacific. After finishing my schooling in Human Development and Family Studies I worked full time in the social work field for approximately two years. I specialized in working with adults with developmental disabilities and found a great love for that population of people.
After getting my feet wet in social work, I sought a new path and came to work for Camp Augusta before embarking on my first experience abroad in Central America. In total, this summer will be my 15th year in a camp community, yet merely my second at Camp Augusta. I recently discovered my love for baking and have decided to toss my career path through a loop or two. I am excited to see what lays ahead for me as a professional baker, and possibly bakery owner (who knows!). But for now, I am a professional Augustan, ready to get dirty, climb trees, jump in the lake, hike to the waterfall, and get my fingers sticky with peanut-butter s’mores!
I am eager to see what kind of ideas you all have brewed up over the last year, what stories you’ll be bringing to the campfire circle, and what dreams you have yet to conquer! Get ready for the ride of your lives, guys, its gonna be a doozy! Waiting for you to arrive! –Lizy
