2008 CIRCLE Application Process
Phase One: to be COMPLETED no later than December 15, including ALL email correspondence
- Download the Permission to Participate form off the CIRCLE page of the website. Have your guardian(s) read it and return it to Camp Augusta via U.S. Mail, or they may email their permission to office@campaugusta.org.
- After the Permission form has been received, the next step is to read over the website – every single page. Reflect on what you have learned, and write down these reflections, as well as questions on anything that is unclear. You’ll be asked about this later.
- The applicant will then send the director (randall@campaugusta.org) an email with their intentions to continue with Phase One. This can be short and sweet. In reply, you will receive a special link to a website page that gives you much more information about what is expected from members of the Camp Augusta community. You’ll need to read every word of this, excluding the staff manual.
- Send an email stating what your relationship is to the vision and mission of Camp Augusta, as well as the mission of the CIRCLE program.
- After that email, you’ll receive a reply that includes 12 questions for you to answer.
- Part I: A single-spaced, 10-point Times New Roman font, .5 margins, 9-12 page response to the 12 questions is about the expected length. It will take you that long to answer those questions.
- Part II: Questions are spawned based on what was written above, and those questions will need a reply. There are a few standard questions that will also need to be answered.
- Part III: Sometimes the reply generates further questions.
- You will also receive a DVD containing audio MP3 files of NPR’s “This I Believe” program. You will then be required to listen to all of these files, and write a paragraph about three that you found particularly meaningful. You will also be required to write your own “This I Believe” statement, which you may be asked questions about that would need further clarification and explanation.
All of the above steps are to be COMPLETED by December 15. At this point, all applications will be reviewed by the Camp Augusta staff, and they will be assessed in terms of the needs of the program as well as the needs of the applicant. You will be given feedback by January 10 with our thoughts as to whether or not we feel that you would be a good fit to continue with Phase Two of the program.
Phase Two: if any of the following deadlines are not met, the applicant will be assumed to have withdrawn from the process, without refund of the deposit.
- Conditional acceptance by January 10.
- Phone call placed from guardian to director by January 20. This call will discuss expectations, time commitments, deadlines and consequences if they are not met, and content of program. Program tuition is $700 for Phase Two, and $850 for the at-camp program.
- After Permission has been secured and the Phase Two program fee of $700 has been received, the conditional applicant will be sent a packet containing videos about adolescent and human development, as well social and cultural issues; there will be writing assignments related to these videos. This packet will also contain DVDs and information pertaining to evening program planning.
- Phone interviews are to be arranged by the conditional applicant at their initiation, and are to be completed by February 29. Interviews will take approximately two hours; figure two 60-minute conversations.
- Journals will begin following the phone interview. Guidelines and expectations for these will be sent at this time. There will be one required e-journal entry to be sent every month, minimum 600 words.
- Writing assignments related to the videos will be due by March 15.
- “Clean communication” is integral to the Camp Augusta community, and especially so within the staff and within the CIRCLE program. This will already have been discussed during Phase One, but there will be a writing assignment at this time to assess the understanding and application of these principles in the conditional applicant’s life.
- A completed, original evening program will be due by April 15. This is a difficult, complex, multi-step process that will require weeks, if not months, of revision and edits. The applicant will receive feedback throughout the process. Example program information will be provided, via the initial packet of videos sent out, to aid the applicant in this process. The completed program is due on the 15th of April; be aware that submitting a program later than the 1st of April will likely not allow enough time to incorporate feedback.
- Read the entire staff manual (about 140 pages), and be prepared to verbally, intelligently discuss any element of it over the phone. This will not be a quiz on facts; it will assess your understanding, and especially your ability to apply the information with camp examples, as well as examples in your own life. This needs to be successfully completed by April 30.
- Take the Myers Briggs Type Indicator assessment at humanmetrics.org, and keep the results to bring with you to camp.
- After completion of these steps, the program counselors will distribute additional items throughout the summer to be completed before arrival at camp, such as more planning, brainstorming, and journaling.
